They either restructure and survive or they liquidate their assets and go out of business. No consumer would buy a car from a bankrupt automaker because they would know that you couldn't trust warranty offers, finance offers or anything else. GM was very specific about this last year when people began talking about the possibility of Chapter 11. It may work for Delphi or even Visteon, but a Chapter 11 at Ford or GM wouldn't be a restructuring, it would be the final nail in the coffin. If Ford can't up its sales to get out of this hole, it will have to close more and more plants. It will have to sell off more business units. I'm sure there are some investors who would love to have a piece of Land Rover or Volvo these days. If the company hits a cash crunch, which it won't for at least a year or two, it has things it can sell without touching its core products -- trucks, SUVs and car loans.
