its like when you go to apply for a job and they tell you "we only hire people with experience". and unless you get a job like that how are you supposed to get experience!? i understand the irony of the situation and the frustration.

it depends what sort of djing you want to do. some people are more cut out for radio, some for clubs or house parties. anyone can put on a record and push the buttons on the mixing board, but my main concern for people i work with at the club nights is that the dancefloor stays filled and that my dj's can read the crowd and keep up with the moods of the night. from my end i cant work with people unless they have the skills to keep up with the demands of the crowd at the club. a great music collection is good, but not as important as reading the crowd and keeping people dancing. every party is a little different. you might have a great set planned out and bring a bunch of industrial and you get requests and the dancefloor is only interested in trashy 80z new wave, or vice versa. every club is different, so are the moods of the crowd each time. if i were starting out and wanting to get into DJing i wouldnt have the slightest idea where to begin. lots of people get turn tables and mixing boards and play around with djing at home before they try for the public arena. i know tons of techno and house guys started that way.

i got my start hanging out in the KFSR station in jr high and high school and then getting to know Primary Girl. eventually i ended up getting my own show on a pirate station in the Tower. then once we were invited to spin at a club in long beach. that was in 98. then in 02 i started FS. but if we didnt get things going there ASAP they would have booted us. i learned early on what worked for our nights and what didnt. fortunately we were able to keep up with the demands. now we have to stay on top of things. unfortunately for up and coming people im not very interested in people using our nights as practice or experiments. i want people that are better than me so i can feel at ease when im running around the club or if i cant make it or if they are doing a separate room. my current dj line up has my complete trust. i knew through and through that Primary girl and Matt D had it covered in the new wave room the other night when Tom and I were doing the industrial room. i dont even need to check on them i trust them so well with keeping things going. they both have been spinning for years and years, Matt since the 80s!

dj Jordan gives dj lessons at his shop in the tower, but thats more like dj mixing and house type style of djing. Jordan would be a good person to ask about getting into spinning. he knows lots of people and has lots of resources at his disposal.

what sort of style are you into and what would you mainly spin? you may want to check into getting in with KFSR if you are a FSU student. thats a good way to start, plus getting a little mixing board and some decks.

hope my dementia was some sort of help,

+Maverick
