An x-ray for hip problems, can only conclusively be taken after 18 months of age. X-rays taken earlier, say at 6 months of age, will usually show if there's a problem, though some problems are only picked up later hence the age of 18 months for x-rays.

A breeder should be able to show you a hip report for both dam and sire of the pups. This report can be from their vet or issued by a scoring body in your country which scores hips from an x-ray taken by a vet. Both parents should have eye certificates stating them to be "unaffected" by the major eye diseases sometimes afflicting the breed, which would be HC and PHPV. You can also ask that your pup be eye tested by an opthalmological specialist at about age 8 weeks for these illnesses, as they often show up very early. Tests are not painful and do not require any kind of anaesthetic. Your breeder can expect you to pay for the test and the pup will require a microchip for an eye certificate to be issued.
