Hi Jason,

I think we live in a world where aggression towards other dogs is really frowned upon and if we want to keep our breed in a world where BSL is implemented by ignorant people, we need to train our dogs from a young age to ignore other dogs where possible. In any case a TRUE stafford will never show needless aggression to another dog - I see too many staffords in the show ring in SA who lunge at other dogs for no other reason than they just want to KILL anything they come into contact with! This is WRONG as true stafford temperament (in MY opinion) is where a Stafford is so sure of himself and his ability, that they basically IGNORE other dogs UNTIL that dog challenges, and then the stafford is CAPABLE of answering that challenge. The stafford has nothing to prove, and therefore does not NEED to lunge and be all vocal.

If we want to keep our breed, we need to make sure our dogs have basic good manners towards other dogs, and this means NO needless aggression towards other dogs. Also, it means we cannot let our dogs "free-run" in dog parks amongst a huge pack of strange dogs because at one point, an ignorant other (strange - new to the pack?) dog will challenge the stafford and, when the stafford answers that challenge, GUESS who will get the blame??

I agree with you that too many dogs in the show ring are not at all in good condition. This is due to overfeeding and underexercising (lazy owners?), but also, to a large degree, due to bad breeding, where "bully" type dogs are bred indiscriminately, instead of going for a balance between bull and terrier, in the misguided thought that "heaviness" equals "good bone" etc.

Bad for the breed!
