I assume you are discarding the old chain? I bought a splitter / riveter contraption when I changed mine, but found a hacksaw much quicker and easier for getting the old chain off!

When I fitted the new chain, I just used the plated which fitted best - the one with the groove as it allows the pins to pass through the link. Then if I remember, you have to somehow compress the end of the pins so they distort slightly and therefore are too large to slip back through, securing the chain.

It was a bit fiddly, but seems to be OK - I fitted the chain 8000 miles ago and had no trouble since!
