Subject: The Majority is Always Wrong

The Majority is Always Wrong

There is a madness in the land: the Voting Day...
and you’ve heard the standard lines used by the braying sheep
to shame you into being a fool along with the rest:
Exercise your right to vote - they say solemnly -
or lose your freedom of speech!
If you don’t vote, you can’t bitch - they say solemnly -
and this, my favorite solemn pronouncement:
It’s because of people who don’t vote that idiots run the government!

Well, that’s like saying: it’s because of people who don’t drive
we have traffic jams, accidents and air pollution.
Yes, well, no wonder I think, with equal solemnity
that the majority is always wrong.

What does it mean to ‘vote’? To exercise one’s freedom of choice?
It means to be there when needed by someone.
It means to care and it means that, according to my power
I desire to change the world and make it into a better place.
I do not do this out of fear, greed, one-upmanship or competition
but rather out of love and caring – it is a personal choice,
not an institutionalized process or an enforced concept.

I have learned that the System as it is called serves but itself;
that whatever it does is for its own ends, never mine!
Once the Church proclaimed if you didn’t go to church
each and every Sunday - you were damned to hell, and so it went:
the people fearfully gave away their time and precious money
to some unseen god who might give you salvation in the end
though no guarantees given by the absentee land lord god!

We no longer believe this, by and large, about the god,
but we still believe it about government and its cancerous bureaucracy.
I hope some day we shall awaken and realize this truth:
all is but energy exchange and how I vote is quite irrelevant.
What matters to the exploiters of man and beast and planet
is that I show up at the polls and give away my power –
and what matters even more is that I do not realize I am doing this!
