The London Mela - Free Community Fun
All communities and all generations are welcome at the London Mela. Organisers are expecting over 60,000 revellers.There are a number of live stages and activity zones. The main stage will feature upcoming and established British Asian talent and international artists and there are classical, indoelectronica, community and cabaret stages.
There’s also a BBC Asian Network stage and a London Flavas stage with urban sounds presented by Radio 1’s Bobby and Nihal. Other zones include a Magic Mela for children, food and retail stalls and a funfair.
Mela Highlights
This year’s highlights include the Dhol Academy’s performance of the Mela Trilogy, catapulting iconic mela instruments into the 21st century. Two pieces - In the Dholdrums and Tabla Blah-Blah - both featured in previous Melas and the final instalment will premiere at this year's event. Titled Sitar Rhapsody, it pays tribute to Freddie Mercury’s Indian connections.
The grand finale of the Mela features the godfather of British Asian urban music, Pandit Dinesh, who teams up with Afro-Latin jazz pianist Kishon Khan. Expect an uplifting performance, complete with percussion and pyrotechnics.
