It still feels really silly when I'm blowing the balloon up though, but that actually helps to diffuse my anger when I'm mad, so it all works out :)
Actually, I've found balloons to be really handy things for casting spells. They're cheap, they're plentiful, they come in all kinds of colours and they can be adapted to hundreds of different situations. Take these two simple spells for example.
There was a particular person at work who was constantly putting me down and acting really nastily. She wasn't really doing it for any reason, except because she knew she could get away with it. I tried pretty much every mundane way of getting her to stop that I could think of - talking to her, trying to reason with her, telling her she was upsetting me, finally even talking to the boss, nothing worked.
Now I don't cast spells on other people (unless I have their permission) because I think it's dangerous and it has a nasty tendancy to backfire, so I wanted a spell that would make me more able to cope with her. I wanted something that would mean I wouldn't be bothered by her behaviour.
I came up with a balloon idea. I blew the balloon up and wrote the person's name on it. I didn't tie it, but I held it closed. I spoke to the balloon, imagining it was her, and told her all the reasons why her behaviour had upset me. I talked the whole thing through (and I tell you, if I felt silly blowing up the balloon I felt *really* silly talking to it!) and when I'd cleared myself of all my upset, hurt and anger, I told the person that she was free to do and say whatever she wanted. I told her that she could be as mean and nasty as she wanted to be, because she didn't have any control over me any more. I told her that from now on, she had no power in my life, as I was taking all the self respect she'd stolen from me back. I finished off saying that I felt no malice toward her, and that I was leaving her free to behave however she wanted. Then I let the balloon go and had a good giggle as it whizzed around the room. I retrieved it from behind my computer, where it had fallen, and threw it out.
The person in question didn't change at all, but from that day on she simply did not upset me. I was able to ignore her, and her behaviour had already meant that no one else wanted to spend time with her. Eventually, she left me alone. I got a much better job in a different company shortly afterwards.
The second balloon spell I used was a dieting spell. I'd been sick for a long time and because of the medication I was on I ended up being really overweight, which was making me feel particularly low. I wrote my own name on the balloon and came up with a short rhyme which I wrote in my Book of Shadows, though I can't remember it off hand. Anyway, the gist of it was that I was going to be fit and well, and I was going to lose weight safely until I was a nice, normal weight again. I did this on the night of the full moon, and then left the balloon to deflate slowly over the waning moon.
Of course I ate sensibly and excercised too, but it was really helpful watching my balloon get smaller and smaller as the weeks went by. It took me a two and a half months, but I was soon back to a nice, healthy weight for my height. I kept the delfated balloon in a small box with a few other bits and pieces, in case I ever needed a "booster" again.
So yeah, I think balloons are great things! One of these days I'll have to write a book of balloon spells. They can be really useful!
