I guess I am required to explain (read: admit) that I did not read the book. I normally read a book a month, but they usually are wrestling biographies or sports-related themes. I am of the current belief that having NOT read the book, I was probably able to enjoy the movie more and less inclined to pick it apart and whine about what's different from the book.

Anyway, I really liked this movie, as did my mom and my wife. It ran a little long (2 1/2 hours) and is dialogue driven, but that didn't bother me one bit. I knew the basic gist of the movie and heard enough sour-grapes reviews to know what I was in store for.

I like Ron Howard movies and he did not disappoint me. Too often he is unfairly criticized for hijacking the audience's emotions instead of creating "real" moments. IT'S A FRIGGIN' MOVIE - it's not "real." He builds suspense nicely and shoots a beautiful film here.

Tom Hanks is pretty non-descript. I believe anyone could have filled this role and Hanks doesn't really do anything with Robert Langdon to convince me otherwise. He did a nice job conveying the idea that he is a caught in the middle of something he doesn't quite understand, but for the most part, he doesn't make or break the movie. Ian McKellen on the other hand is awesome. As soon as you hear his voice he provides a spark to the film and he energizes every scene he's in. He delivers his history-filled hammy dialogue with such gravitas that you he makes you think twice about who to root for. Paul Bettany is almost-scarily creepy and the rest of the cast does what it is supposed to do.

We didn't encounter any protests or whatnot, just some dolt with a ringing cellphone whom I told to shut it off before I jam it into his piehole.

Recommended.
