Subject: Grumpy, cynical review of a summer blockbuster

Dammit, I can't even be cynical about it, I just loved this film. The first one shocked me with how good it was (seriously, how good did anyone expect a film based on a Disney ride to be?), and I really felt DMC was just as much fun as the first.

Johnny Depp is simply one of the best actors alive, and nearly every expression and gesture he does is funny. Jack Sparrow's "arms flailing madly" run (and he does a lot of running in this movie) always makes me laugh. And like Flair, I really enjoyed the last minute reveal, even if it was just a blatant lead-in to the sequel.

If I have any complaint, it's that Bill Nighy, one of my favorite actors, is largely wasted, since he's covered pretty much head to toe in CGI. Also, I've seen beige wallpaper with more personality than Orlando Bloom (and pairing him onscreen with Depp is just a cruel thing to do).

But it's nice to see Hollywood get a summer blockbuster right for a change.
