Subject: Assault on Precinct 13

The original was typical low-budget 70's fare, but a solid action flick. This one, while changing the plot of Carpenter's original quite a bit, is also a solid action flick, with better acting and cinematography.

A quick plot synopsis: Laurence Fishburne is Marion Bishop, an organized crime kingpin, who is finally caught by Detroit's finest. It is New Year's Eve weekend, so he can't get in front of a judge to post bail and therefore must spend 2 nights behind bars. However, Bishop is in cahoots with Marcus Duvall (Gabriel Byrne) a Motown cop who is intent on silencing Bishop before he goes public with their naughty partnership. Bishop and a few other criminals (John Leguizamo, Ja Rule) are being transferred to County holding during a snowstorm when they get directed to Precinct 13, a closed building being manned on its last night by desk jockey Jake Roenick (Ethan Hawke), sex-crazed secretary Iris (Drea de Matteo), Roenick's police shrink Alex Sabian (Maria Bello) and grizzled veteran Jasper (Brian Dennehy), who just wants to get drunk. Anyway, the police attack the Precinct to get Bishop, so Roenick decides to partner up with the crooks to keep them all from being killed by Duvall and his men.

The movie has a nice pace and moves along nicely. It keeps you on your toes (people are going to die here) and throws in a nice little plot twist to keep your guessing. Laurence Fishburne is excellent. He towers over everyone and steals scenes just by cocking his head or pursing his lips. Ethan Hawke doesn't bother me, but he's not essential to the movie. (I heard Mark Wahlberg was the original choice for this role.) Drea de Matteo is hot. Sure, she's not the prettiest girl, but she's just hot. She wears a black mini skirt the entire time, even when crawling through broken glass.

I don't mind excessive violence, but first-time French director Jean-François Richet must have an affinity for upclose shots of bullet holes in the head with blood dripping out. If you were playing a drinking game that had you chugging everytime a scene like that was shown, you would be drunk by the end of the movie.

Recommended.
