I honestly didn't see many movies in 2004, but I'll throw a few out, in no particular order...

The Incredibles: Not quite the best animated film I've ever seen, or the best superhero movie, but darn close on both counts. Enormously fun.

The Life Aquatic: I'm a nut for the low-key humor of Wes Anderson films. Bill Murray gives yet another performance that deserves an Oscar but sadly probably won't earn one. Has anyone else noticed that he's become one of the best actors in the world the last few years? (And yes, I am pretending that he had no involvement with Garfield)

Spider-Man 2: Not a perfect movie, but about as close to perfection as any summer blockbuster has a right to be, and so faithful to the spirit and energy of the comic book it makes this comic geek want to cry tears of joy.

Shaun of the Dead: British sitcom characters thrust into what is essentially a serious horror film, with amazingly funny results. Hilarious, sometimes really scary, and even strangely touching in a few moments.

Anchorman: Funniest movie of the year, hands down. Brilliantly stupid, with pretty much every single person in the cast providing laughs, and the most absurdly funny fight scene ever.

My "Guilty Pleasure of the Year" Award goes to: Damn Will Smith, but he's just so damned likable I couldn't dislike I, Robot, as much as I wanted to.

The "I Want My Money and Two Hours of My Life Back" Award is shared by two films, Troy and Aliens vs. Predator. Troy for dumbing down one of the most acclaimed works in all of classical literature to the point that a 10 year war took 3 weeks, and AvP for proving that no matter how low I set my expectations, some filmmakers can still limbo their way under them.
