I couldn't agree with you more, but I wouldn't say the iambic pentameter is over your head--you catch on quick. You really do understand the rhyme scheme, but let me help you out with the iambic pentameter a little bit. Let's look at your line:

it's BEEN too LONG

You have 2 stressed syllables. Here's what you need to do: keep the pattern (unstress-stress-unstress-stress, etc.), but add a little to your lines so that there are 5 stressed syllables per line. Let me give it a shot:

since I last HEARD your VOICE it's BEEN too LONG

Now there are 5. All you need to do is add a little to the lines. Very moving!
