Shakespeare's word choice, or diction, is important because it shows that the time of the year is in late fall or early winter where everything in nature seems to be dead. The dark words he uses gives the reader a sense of darkness and depression. The setting helps to create Shakespeare's feelings toward the character, or his former lover. It seems that she finally has fallen in love with him after a long term of being in denial. The darkness can be an example as to how his life was while she did not love him like when he talks about the fire with the ashes of his youth and that his deathbed is no more- this could possibly be because she finally shares his feelings.
