Shakespeare’s diction expresses the season of fall, by simply saying that there are not many leaves, but ones that are left are of a dying yellow color. And that it is cold with no more birds out singing, and everything is soon beginning to die as winter comes. The season in this sonnet is a metaphor for love changing over time. He is saying that his love was so powerful when he was young, and that it consumed him. He recognizes and is appreciative that love is passionate at first, but that feeling will not stay. This is similar to the changing season of deep greens, and lively colors to the dullness of fall and then to the death of winter.
