In reply to: Mrs. G. 's message, "Becoming Shakespeare: Write Your Own Sonnet (LESSON 4)" on 15:01:03 01/02/03 Thu

I figured it would only be fair if I broke the ice and did this with you, and so I give you (drum roll, please) a sonnet on love. It was tough! The results were a bit wooden and definitely corny, but lots of fun. Do keep in mind that I'm no Shakespeare . . .

Mrs. G.'s Sonnet: An Apology for Writer's Block

Your eyes I will not celebrate in verse,
Your will with ardent prose I'll never gauge,
And though you'll take my meaning for the worse,
I love you no more than an empty page.
The lightning that a well-penned word creates
No sooner than the ink is dry grows cold.
And like a storm the passion there abates,
Yet stroke of pen and promise once were bold.
From fool to king the vain hope still persists
To trust the quill immutable as rock--
No sentiment on paper here exists
That age and time and memory can't mock.
Thus with each hackneyed rhyme of mine unwrit,
My love for you is proved the more legit.
