TALK TO A TORY - JULY 15, 2003

ALL-CONSTITUENCY NORTHERN ALBERTA BBQ A GREAT SUCCESS!

PC Leader Peter MacKay arrived in Edmonton on the afternoon of July 6, participated in a number of one-on-one media interviews and received very favourable press. Mr. MacKay met with 17 potential candidates and it looks like there may quite a few nomination races in Northern Alberta.

The barbecue was very well attended by over 350 people. There were many new faces and the mood was quite upbeat. We helped the beef industry by serving four HUGE roast hips of beef with all the trimmings. Mr. MacKay and Lisa Merrithew gracefully worked the room chatting with each person in a very relaxed manner. Many pictures were taken.

Mr. MacKay gave an excellent speech in which he reiterated that we will run 301 candidates and any talks will be directed to building coalitions within the big tent of the PC Party. This message was greeted with very loud and sustained applause.

A silent auction raised about $4,000 for the constituency coffers.

Mr. MacKay presented volunteer gifts to the two co-chairs of the 2002 Leader's Dinner, Patricia Gay and Kathy Bruce-Kavanagh, and one to Bev Mahood as the Alberta representative on the Leader's Selection Committee. As well, he presented a gift to Noel and Sherry Lavery, who acted as DROs for the eight Edmonton and Area ridings. Then it was back to Calgary to attend the Premier's breakfast the next day.

TORY M.P.S IN THE NEWS

- Inky Mark, Member of Parliament for Dauphin-Swan River, was in the news this week, insisting that the government take responsibility for actions of its residential schools programs.

In a letter to the Minister Responsible for Indian Residential Schools Resolutions Canada, Mr. Mark wrote, "Where negligence has occurred, those responsible should be held accountable. Otherwise, it is the Government's responsibility to bear the consequences and costs of its policy. It was the Federal Government that provided the core funding, set the standards of care, supervised the schools' administration and controlled the children as wards of the Government. It is time for the Federal Government to accept its responsibility by making full and complete restitution to legitimate claims."

- Gary Schellenberger, Member of Parliament for Perth-Middlesex, was in Ottawa to discuss the ongoing Mad Cow Disease crisis with senior officials from Agriculture Canada and Minister Lyle Vanclief's office.

In a press release this week, Mr. Schellenberger said, "The compensation package that was announced on June 18 is too narrow in scope - it does not help trucking companies, rendering plants, auctioneers, or dead stock removal companies, to name just a few. I can't emphasize enough the importance of re-opening the U.S. border to Canadian beef. Many people are working hard on this issue and I call on the Canadian and U.S. governments to continue to work hard at every level to achieve this end as soon as possible."

2003 WAR CHEST CAMPAIGN

A message from Scott Thorkelson, 2003 War Chest Campaign:

"The 2003 Constituency War Chest Campaign is in full swing. Constituencies are holding fundraising cruises, BBQs, lobster boils and dinners. Our second conference call for Regional Campaign Directors or Council Chairs is tomorrow July 12 at 12:00 (noon) EDT.

We hope to have Ernie Nock talk about his "Night at the Races" fundraising idea and another guest talk about how his constituency responded to the President's Challenge.
President Bruck Easton will be on the call to give us a few words of encouragement.

John Laschinger has been confirmed as a guest for the August Conference Call and in the future we hope to hear from Irving Gerstein, the PC Canada Fund Chair, and from the Leader himself. As well, in the future, as we talk about direct mail fundraising, we will hear from experienced U. S. political pros.

Tomorrow's call will revolve around the President's Challenge and putting a constituency fundraising plan in place. Regional participants will be asked to report on their region's activities.

Remember to discuss with other members that we will be having an on-line auction late this fall. Start to think of services and good that might be appropriate for ridings to auction off."
