Moggie ends specs on dropping of three incumbents
By Joseph Wong
KUCHING - Parti Bangsa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS) president Datuk Amar Leo Moggie yesterday ended speculations that three of its eight incumbents would be dropped from the coming State election.
"No decision has yet been made on who should be fielded," he said after a four-hour Supreme Council meeting yesterday evening.
Moggie was responding to a recent report saying PBDS would likely drop three of its candidates - Mong Dagang, John Sikei and Dublin Unting.
PBDS currently has eight assemblymen - Dato S'ng Chee Hua (Pelagus), Dato James Jemut Masing (Baleh), Gabriel Adit (Ngemah), Stanley Ajang (Belaga), Dublin Unting (Batang Ai), John Sikei (Kakus), Joseph Entulu (Tamin) and Mong Dagang (Bukit Bagunan).
Moggie stressed its assemblymen were generally doing a good job in their constituencies. "People will always have views of their own … that cannot be helped. Nevertheless we will look into our constituencies in greater detail."
He said for the next few months, PBDS would be more active at grassroot level, particularly in its constituencies, to ensure that the people were aware and understand what benefits they could derive from the policies of the Barisan Nasional (BN) government.
He said the exercise was to prepare the party for the coming State election, ad-ding that the PBDS seminar on February 2-4 would be postponed to accommodate the exercise.
Meanwhile, Moggie said PBDS would launch several education programmes in the State. "Education plays an important role in the State and nation and PBDS will help the Education Ministry in any way it could, particularly in rural areas," he said.
The party will also carry out a study on the impact of rural-urban migration. "We will do a survey on this to find out its effects on the socio-economic environment."

LANJAT ... consult grassroots
'Don't speculate on lineup of candidates for polls'
KUCHING - A PBDS branch secretary has called on certain party leaders to refrain from making speculative statements on the likely line-up of candidates for the coming State election.
Saying it was unethical to do so, secretary of the Lubok Antu branch of the party, Councillor Lanjat Malong, pointed out that the grassroots leaders must be properly consulted on the choice of candidates for the election.
He said: "This is a basic principle which must apply to all areas, including Lubok Antu."
"Support of the grassroots leaders and the people in the constituencies must be taken into account when deciding on the choice of candidates and not the personal preferences of some selected few leaders", added Lanjat.
His view was also shared by Councillor Temeling ak Jua, chairman of PBDS Lemanak branch.
Chairman of PBDS Skarok branch, Lembang ak Bagong, who was also upset over the speculation, said the views and feelings of branch party leaders who had toiled hard to "put the respective people in their DUN and MP seats" must be heeded in any major decision-making process.

Safeguard peace in plural society, reminds CM
By William Chan
BEKENU - Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud has reiterated his call to the people to safeguard peace at all times.
Speaking at the Aidilfitri gathering organised by the Bekenu Malay Welfare Trust Board (LAKMB) at the Al-Muttaqin mosque here yesterday, he said peace was one of the three important factors to ensure harmonious interaction and prosperity within a plural society.
The other two factors were to ensure that prosperity was shared by all strata of society instead of a few and that all Sarawakians must have respectable character to earn the respect of others.
"Without these three factors, the cordial relationship, as reflected during occasions like Hari Raya, Christmas and Chinese New Year, might not be possible," he added.
Taib said the people's livelihood could not be guaranteed without peace.
"All development efforts will be threatened while progress could be destroyed as shown by neighbouring countries."
Instability, he added, would definitely scare away investors and without investments, poverty could grip the whole nation.
"The people must never lose sight of the fact that the country could not prosper if the people rely heavily on government subsidies or handouts from the rich. Neither could the communist system of robbing the rich to distribute their wealth to the masses succeed as evidenced in the crumbling of the communist countries."
In Malaysia the Barisan Nasional government's main agenda would be to ensure that the people prosper through the best economic system without having to create enmity amongst any group or individuals, Taib stressed.
In this regard, he expressed bewilderment over the tactics of certain opposition politicians who preferred to create a confrontational situation for the people.
At the function he launched the Sibuti Orphanage and Poor Children (Peryakin) fund under the auspices of LAKMB.
He pledged the government would top up the fund with RM50,000 if LAKMB succeeded in raising the same amount this year.

Taib: Racial unity basis for continued progress
By Harun Jau
KUCHING - Maintaining and strengthening racial unity among various races in the state is important for the State's continued progress, stressed Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud.
"In Sarawak, there is no majority race. The Chinese are not a majority race, the Dayaks are not, neither are the Malays," Taib noted when speaking at Majlis Silaturahim Aidilfitri organised by Yayasan Budaya Melayu Sarawak and Hikmah at the Civic Centre here on Friday evening.
Taib pointed out that it would be difficult to maintain political stability if unity among the various races in the state was destroyed.
"Therefore, it is my duty to maintain unity of not only the Malays but also the Chinese, Dayaks and other races, because their unity is the basis for us to always remain peaceful, and to concentrate on planning effective strategies to bring about more development to the people in the state," he added. Hence, unity should be valued as a very important matter by everyone.
In preserving unity, he continued, it was not enough just to know how to talk but have honesty, wisdom and look after the interest of all races.
Taib assured that he would not just sit down when the unity of the Malays was threatened, as seen from the results of the last parliamentary election.
He said the decline in numbers of votes for the Barisan Nasional, especially in the Malay areas in Kuching in the last parliamentary election must be viewed seriously.
Meanwhile, Taib said the BN had been sensitive and acted positively to attend to the needs and grievances of the rakyat.
"When we received complaints that our YBs were not doing their job, we investigated and took action. We also checked whether they had spent the allocation given to them for their areas, whether they had fulfilled their promises to the people and so on."
He noted that allegations thrown at the Barisan Nasional YBs that they had not looked after the people they represented were sometimes baseless.
The Chief Minister reminded that the BN government had always been honest and sincere in its struggle for the people.
"If we cannot do something for the people, we say we cannot do it. We are not afraid to tell them the truth. We are very frank."
He reiterated: "There is no truth in the allegation that our YBs are selfish and only thinking of their own interests."
Touching on NCR land, an issue manipulated by certain groups during previous elections, Taib said the government had never considered native lands or those owned by Malays as 'squatter lots'.
"The government knows the difference between lands that are squatter and those of genuine Bumiputra rights. When carrying out development projects, all lands affected and taken were replaced, bought and duly compensated by the government," he added.
Taib recalled that the issue had been used by the opposition to win the Malay votes, especially in Kuching. Certain groups had accused the State government of not recognising Malay land rights.
"It's just propaganda to fish for votes and to fan feelings of hatred towards the government," he commented.
