I understand your problems with White Star. It's mostly because they are the new place and with a big line out the door on the weekends, it would be easy to "grow a big head".

Anyway, from what you asked, you sound like you want to get away from the large club scene. My best suggestion is to head up and down Division Street around Rush Street. The bar scene is known best for "favorite tunes" and good drinking. If Top 40 isn't what you desire, then head over to Mad Bar in Wicker Park or even some rock venues like Double Door.
