I've put together a draft report for the show Brad, Chip and Colin did at Washington College on Sunday. I did this without my notes so it won't be on the site in final draft until I go over it with my notes. We also took a lot of pictures and will have some of those up on the site soon as well.
Hope you enjoy.
Brad Sherwood, Chip Esten, Colin Mochrie
Washington College, Chestertown, MD
April 13, 2003
Jean and I made sure we got to the fitness center where the show was taking place really early so we were sitting in the center row. There were some rather interesting goings on before the show even began. When we got there we could see that the there were tables and chairs set up banquet style with some rows of seats way up the back. This didn’t last long because as soon as Brad, Chip, and Colin got there and saw the set up they had all of the tables taken down and the chairs set up in rows. I’ve got to say, out of all of the shows we’ve been to at colleges this was probably the most disorganized.
The show was to begin at 8:00 and promptly at 8:00 one of the students (I guess she was the coordinator for the event) got on stage to introduce the guys. Only problem was that no one told Chip, Brad, and Colin that they were being introduced. After about a 5 minute pause Brad and Colin came out but no Chip. A few minutes later Chip came barreling out of the back stage area and jumped up on the stage. He had to go right back down off the stage though because they had forgotten to bring their list of games out with them. While he was off Brad explained that they hadn’t been told that they were being introduced and that Chip had actually been in the bathroom at the time (yeah, more information than we really needed to know). He also explained that they only had 2 clip on microphone sets so they’d have to keep trading off and one of them would have to use a regular mike at times. It made for some interesting dance routines during the course of the show.
Questions Only
They started off with Questions Only and it was set at a circus. At one point Chip or Brad (I can’t remember and I don’t have my notes with me as I’m writing this) asked Colin about being a Grandpa. This of course got the crowd on Colin’s side. Colin came back with “How does it feel to have the whole crowd against?”
At one point Chip came out and pretended to be Colin’s son. He then bombarded Colin with a barrage of questions which all began with “Why”. Frankly I wouldn’t have been surprised if he had asked why the sky was blue. Colin just rubbed his head and asked “Why does my head always hurt when you’re around?”
Colin ended up winning the game.
Moving People
This was the highlight of the night for Jean and I. When Colin asked for volunteers Jean and I raised our hands and he picked us. For the game Jean was moving Chip and I was moving Brad. Colin went through the usual spiel before the game began explaining how to get Chip and Brad to move. He was demonstrating on Chip and seemed to be talking more to Jean. I’d seen Moving People done before so I have to confess I wasn’t really paying a whole lot of attention to the instructions Colin gave. I do know that at one point Colin made a comment about grabbing Chip’s butt and promptly grabbed Chip there. Of course the whole audience started to laugh. As soon as they quieted down, Brad jumped forward and yelped as if I had grabbed his butt. I can assure you that I was standing their quite innocent and did not touch the man’s butt.
Colin asked for a country that wouldn’t win and Academy Award for a movie and Hungary was chosen.
Now was when I found out that Moving People is not as easy as it seems to be. It’s really quite hard to pick up on the clues given to move them and getting them to move is not the easiest thing in the world. I think I was also hampered because Brad’s really a big guy and I’m pretty small. I could just barely stand behind him and reach around and move both of this arms at the same time. I glanced over a Jean a few times and she seemed to faring a little better than me moving Chip – although his arms did seem to flail around a lot.
Brad announced that they were making goulash (sp) so I turned him toward Chip, grabbed his arms and kinda moved them around like he was cooking. I’m not sure what it looked like though. Then he said something about stirring the goulash and I got that no problem. Somewhere along the line Chip said that he was going to clap for the goulash but I’m not sure how that came about.
I’m also not too sure how I suddenly had Brad drinking something, but hey, he mad it work out fine. Chip ended up eating the goulash but doing it without a spoon. Brad, too, was eating his goulash without a spoon. I did try to make it look like he had a spoon but didn’t have any luck.
After eating the goulash, Chip somehow ended up with his hands in his hair, on his hips, on his chest and doing the Pledge of Allegiance to the Goulash (he was laughing so hard he almost didn’t get it out). The whole entire time he had his hands on his chest he kept say “don’t look at my boobies” which just had me in stitches. Brad finally announced the he was going to go get a towel for Chip since he had goulash all over him. I don’t know why but I didn’t want to make Brad walk for this so I just turned him around at the waist and made him reach out for the towel. He made a comment to Chip about the towel being really close to him.
Chip then said he was going to give Brad a present that he had to walk to get. I happened to glance up as Jean was moving Chip and at one point his legs were twisted and he looked like he was going to fall. I made a mental note to remember not to twist Brad’s legs. For some reason I had Brad walk with Chip to go get the present and it turned into some sort of race. Finally Chip gave Brad the present which, because of the way I put out Brads arms to take the present, was a map of Czekloslovakia (sp). He then told Brad that he wanted him to leave.
Well, I did manage to get Brad turned around without any mishap and started to make him walk. Only problem was, I was now facing Colin who was thoroughly enjoying watching us all make fools of ourselves which only got me to laughing move. I kept hitting the backs of Brad’s legs to make him walk but wasn’t really looking at my hands or paying attention. It’s a good thing that I finally did look down, though, because I wasn’t really aiming my hand to hit Brad’s leg but rather between his legs. It could have been really interesting had I not looked down when I did.
Colin ended the game then and thanked us for doing a good job as did Chip and Brad. I had a great time doing it but will never think it’s easy again.
One other thing, I’ve always heard how hot it is under stage lights. Well, I got to experience it and I can tell you that it’s really hot. The first thing I noticed when I got up on the stage was the temperature difference. When I touched Brad to move him, his shirt was actually a little damp from sweat.
New Choice
The next game they played was New Choice. Colin and Brad played the game and Chip called new choice – something he seems to take great pleasure in. Chip asked the audience for the name of a made up store and the name he was given was “Roses”. He laughingly asked for someone to explain to him later, “why Roses was so damn funny.”
When they started the scene Brad was working in the store and Colin was coming in to buy something. I really don’t remember anything specific about the game (I was still on my Moving People high) but I do remember that at one time Brad was making something out of roses but it went through a lot of changes. I believe some of the things it was were: The Statue of Liberty, Big Ben, the Space Needle with carnations on the top, a small statue of Adrian Barbeau and then a big statue of Shaquille O’Neill.
At some point Brad was also rubbing rose emollients on Colin’s back which Colin equated to first angel’s tears, then the horns of devil. Like I said, Chip seemed to take great joy in calling New Choice.
Sentences
While Chip and Brad were out in the audience collecting the sentences, Colin made a comment that they were really nice to look at and then said that it was better to look at them than to know them.
Chip and Colin played the game and it was set in a jail. It was one of the those games where the sentences just seemed to go so well with what was going on.
For example, Colin was supposed to be the new guy in jail and one of the sentences he picked up said “I like buttock” which he explained as being the way to get people to like you in jail. Chip had also given himself a name having to do with snakes. He no sooner said it than he picked up a sentences which said “Why do you have a snake.” Apparently Colin was in jail for collecting exotic snakes.
The sentences went on fitting in with what the scene was. Finally at the end Colin said he was getting out in three years and Chip said he was getting out the next day. He picked up a sentence which was supposed to be the first thing he was going to do when he got out and read “It’s raining men”.
Brad ended the game there and them commented on how so many of the sentences fit in with a jail scene.
Styles
The next game was styles which was played by Chip and Brad. This game is very similar to Film, TV, and Theater styles. Every so often Colin would yell out freeze and ask the audience for a different style.
They began with Colin asking the audience for something that would be an obsession and penguins was chosen. Brad became a professor studying penguins and Chip was his student.
Some of the styles they did (not necessarily in order) were:
Theater – Gertrude Stein (When Colin yelled freeze after this he said “Enough of that crap”)
Movie – Reality
Part of the Video Store – Action (While they were doing this Brad and Chip start “fighting” and somehow Chip was bent over backwards when Colin yelled freeze.
He was not very happy to have to remain in the positions. Colin took his time getting the next style and Chip kept yelling at him
to hurry up.)
Director – Woody Allen (Chips and Brad’s Woody Allen was almost as bad as Wayne’s but not quite. When Colin yelled freeze he complimented them on doing a
great Gertrude Stein)
Part of the Video Store – Horror (Brad made a stereotypical Horror statement about Chip getting naked to take a shower while he, Brad, went outside in the dark,
with his flashlight with the going dead batteries to look for the monster – it was pretty funny)
They ended with Colin having them do Horror/Porn.
Celebrity Improv Jeopardy
I wish I could remember more about Jeopardy because it was so funny but I’m lost without any notes. Brad was the host and Colin was Reginald who owned a dinner theater and Chip was Deremy, an 8th year senior.
A couple of the questions I can remember are:
Element on the Periodic Table of Elements – Francium
Colin answered this with “What country surrenders before very war?”
French words – Maird (sp)
This became a double jeopardy and Colin had to give two answers. I don’t remember both of them but I do remember one was “Who marries the Paird?” He
then asked for Brad’s two answers. The first one Brad came out with was “How does a hillbilly say he’s married?” I can’t remember his second but it wasn’t too
funny – to which he replied it was all he had.
That’s about all I can remember about Jeopardy until I get my notes.
Acapella Song
The guys sang and Acapella Doo Wop song about Madonna who was killed when a cow fell on her. The song was really good and very funny and the three of them really sounded good. Well, ok, Brad and Chip sounded really good and Colin came up with a really funny Colin-type verse.
Sound Effects
Chip and Brad played this game and they were steelworkers. The audience member making Chip’s sound was really good. The one doing Brad’s wasn’t as great and a lot of times she mimicked the other guy.
During this game the lights went out. Brad and Chip first told everyone to stay calm and stay seated. They then said they were going to do sound effects in the dark – which they did. Finally, after a few minutes they tech people go a spotlight on the stage except they were aiming it at the two making sound effects and Colin. Brad had to nicely tell them that they should have the spotlight on him and Chip and not the others. The played the game that way for about 5 minutes or so and then the stage lights came back on. It was quite interesting.
Interrogation
I don’t really remember a lot of this but Colin’s crime was that he beat a man with a flute case because he stole his zebra. He did this wearing a polka dotted suit and silk stockings in the Alley Cat in Rock Hall. The piece of evidence was a 9-iron.
One of the things that sticks out for me in this is that in order to get Colin to say hall Brad, and the Chip, kept making references to Hall and Oates songs. Jean and I immediately got the reference but Colin didn’t seem to.
Interrogation lasted about 15 minutes. I’ll add more about it when I revise this report with my notes.
Rap Song
The last game they played was a rap song. The brought a man out of the audience, Henry, and sang a rap song to him. Henry was a cartographer for FEMA who made flood maps. He liked to drink, play pool, pay on the computer. During various points of the rap Brad, Chip or Colin would put the mike in front of Henry and he would say “I’m MC Hank”. The song the three of them put together was great.
At one point Brad backed himself up into Henry and made up some lyrics about Henry grabbing his rear. All in all, all three of them came up with some great lyrics and Henry was just great with him “I’m MC Hank”
That was the final game of the night and even though the show was 90 minutes, it seemed to just fly by.
Jean and I waiting around for a bit after the show and we got to meet the guys. We took some pictures with them after show and got autographs. We’ll have the pictures up on the website soon as well as the final draft of my report and Jean’s report.
