I'm also a history fan.

Ken Burns Civil War documentary is one of the best things I've ever seen on television.

The movie Glory is a very good film, that also has the civil war as a backdrop (if you see it, you can then make a pilgrimage to the monument of the unit shown in the film. It's near one corner of The public Gardens. The monument is also, briefly, shown in the film.)

I agree with you; violence for violence sake is vastly different that violence used to illustrate a historical truth.
