Hi Sabre--on the 5/11/2002 Setec of Finland acquired the right to manufacture and market smartcards based on Proton previously to that in February of 2001 -- Datacard USA. who is a current Proton vendor, joined with Total SystemServices,Inc.to collaborate World's First Implementation of Global PlatformCardConfigurator and Script Builder Process, which is the new Smart Card Infrastructure used (NT) -- to Issue Visa Smart Debit/Credit Cards, Total System Services, Inc.began issuing Visa Smart Debit/Credit (VSDC) cards for Providian Bank of San Francisco, one of the first U.S. financial institutions to issue smart cards. Total Systems Inc worked closely with Datacard Group,with Proton vendor Datacard U.S.A.for several months before that to prepare for the program--re First Providan., GlobalPlatform is the only cross-industry forum focused on the development, management and promotion of specifications for multiple application, smart cards, smart card applications, and enabling devices.GlobalPlatform promotes a standard framework facilitating, the implementation of smart card programs in any industry around the world.GlobalPlatform allows flexibility in thechoiceof technologies, and vendors through an emphasis on open standards for cards,terminals&support infrastructure, Global Platform stated this on the 27/1/2001"The Open Platform card and terminal specificationsare the first open standards, adopted by GlobalPlatform and will provide a solid foundation -- from which the organization will define the future of multiple application smart cards."on the 23 of October 2001 GlobalPlatform announced two specifications which make the creation of multi application smartcards, as easy and transparent to card issuers as installing off-the-shelf software on PC platforms,
