I'm sorry, but Cheli's chilli was not worth $3! Maybe he's made improvements since moving to Detroit. And why is that Karen Newman so darn popular? I've heard her sing and I wasn't overly impressed. Just me, though.

Chelios gets quick start in minor league debut

FRASER, MICH.—It didn't take long for Detroit Red Wings defenceman Chris Chelios to contribute to his first-ever minor league hockey game last night.

On the second shift of his United Hockey League debut with the Motor City Mechanics, the three-time Norris Trophy winner scored on a power play with a blast from the right point.

"I think this was my first competitive game since the World Cup," Chelios said. "It felt good though."

Chelios was partnered on the blue-line with fellow Red Wings defenceman Derian Hatcher, who made his Mechanics debut Wednesday night in Flint.

The Red Wings were on the ice for all but one of the regulation goals in the Mechanics' 4-3 shootout victory over the Rockford IceHogs before a capacity crowd of 3,110 fans at Great Lakes Sports City Arena.

Both Red Wings were stopped on their shootout opportunities.

The Detroit players, along with centre Kris Draper, signed with the club Tuesday. Draper, who did not play because of difficulty getting a work visa, wore an olive green suit and stood with the coaches behind the team bench.

As the lockout drags on, the three Red Wings will play home games and make some short-distance road games.

Many fans wore Red Wings apparel to last night's game and got a dose of Hockeytown, both on and off the ice.

Karen Newman, the regular anthem singer for Red Wings home games at Joe Louis Arena, sang the national anthem before the game. Fans also had an opportunity to dine on fare from Chelios' sports bar in Dearborn.

A bowl of Cheli's Chili, with onions and jalapenos, cost $3.
