For your husbands erectile issues for intercourse I am sure you have thought of viagra or cialis, perhaps even used them. Just realize that even with the help of drugs, if he is extremely nervous he won't be able to get an erection. The stress is affecting his blood pressure, and that is not allowing the erection to happen.
So, it sounds as if you occasionally resort to artificial insemination (AI). I would suggest that you leave him to his privacy, and have him ejaculate into a medical sterile collection cup. Perhaps you are trying to assist or aid in his effort so that it has a more intimate feeling. But many men (probably 90%) cannot "perform" in front of others. They want to, have the will to, but their body chemistry won't allow it because of blood pressure fluctuations. The collection cup is a larger target than the opening of a syringe. Heck, use a clean bowl if you need to, so that the stress "hitting the target" is not disruptive to his focus. Be sure he is laying horizontally, so his legs aren't using up blood. Use some good porn - there are only a few men alive who won't be able to get off to some good porn while laying on a bed in the privacy of their own home. I believe one had a movie made about him called the 40-year-old virgin. Give him as much time as he needs and don't bother him.
There is no urgency once the donation has been produced. Some feel you need to get it right in, but that is not true. Let it sit in low light, at room temperature, covered, for about 10-15 minutes so that it liquefies, and then DRAW the seminal fluid into the syringe - do not try and pour it in from the back and then put the plunger in as you will spray it out. This is why you need to let it liquefy.
Once he gets better at hitting his target, I highly recommend using the Instead Soft Cup and have him ejaculate into that. This way no handling of the semen is done, nothing is lost in transferring from container to syringe, and you can then just slip the ISC in (it does take a little practice).
