Subject: I need gaiting info

I have a 21 yr old gaited horse. I was told he is a TWH but he has no papers to prove this. He only paces (in pasture and under saddle) and when i first got him he would not canter, now after working with him he canters(Not often since he appears unsure of himself and switches leads and breaks down to pace with no warning so for safety reasons i dont canter him much) . My friend watched him and said he goes into a rack before he pops into the canter. After learning that i watched speed racking videos and would really like to get a speed racking horse. I would like to get some general info on them, i love the power and speed they show and they appear to be much smoother than my poor Bo with his hard pace LOL. What are common soundness issues to watch for, things to avoid when shopping for one etc.. Also not to sound totally stupid but is this the gait often seen on tracks with the sulky cart ?? Bo was my first gaited horse (had QH all my life)and i will never go back, i just love the gaited horses now. I know very little about the different gaits and breeds and need some additional info before i decide to get one or not.
