I think that is a very good question. I can think of some answers but I am not in a grade 1 band.

I play in a grade 2 band for a very short period of time that playing in a group of that caliber was very satisfying. good tone, play together, even boring music was fun.

On the other hand, what is the good of playing in a grade one band if you don't share your talent and let people hear it. IT is not ALL about competition but it seems that Grade one centres around the worlds. Nothing else matters. I just happen to feel that our local games could benifit if the big guns participated. It would help draw more people into our hobby to keep these big bands going in the future.

I wouldn't waste time in a band that didn't play anywhere!

I wonder if this is a games committee problem or the bands refusing to compete at local games?

I realize this post is REALLY late, but I just found the board. I'm on the USS Committee for the Costa Mesa Games. Both the LA Scots and Prince Charles were invited down for the Grade 1 contest. Prince Charles declined because they wanted to go to a different games in Canada, so, no Grade 1 contest. So, LA Scots were asked to perform. Even though their Grade 1 band declined to come, there was no reason for their Grade 3 to decline, so they came.

Unfortunately, with only 2 local Grade 1 bands, when can't make it, there's no contest. Money has always been an issue for the Costa Mesa games, so bringing in a non-local Grade 1 band just isn't an option.

We did the best we could however.
