Re: RAF El Adem -- Bert Webb, 16/09/13 9:24:11
Hello Stan,
I was at EA from 1962-64. Yes, I remember as a fireman on domestic fire duty the night of the Beverly crash.
If it wasn't for the concrete block gun emplacement, it could have hung together and nobody hurt.
I wonder if anyone remembers the Xmas 1962 when each section constructed a bar in their hut.
The NAFFI girls had constructed their private bar which many airmen visited, myself included.
I saw a queue of airmen at one door in the hut but later kicked myself because I was not in the know until too late.
It seems one of the girls was giving out for free what we couldn't get in Tobruk.
The sad part is, that one spoil sport took his share, then went to the guard room and reported what was going on.
The good lady was promptly shipped back to Blighty.
What great days they were. There was something El Adem had that no other station ever had and that was a strong comradeship.
Best Regards,
Bert Webb
