Hi Betty

I was reading the Sunday papers yesterday and one had a article in saying how the market for new and secondhand SUV's has collapsed in the US.

It compares Gas or petrol prices in the US and the UK. With Gas prices in the US at $3 a gallon (44p per litre equivalent in the UK) compared to 94p per litre pump price in the UK. Diesel prices are even more 97p per litre. This would make it more like $7 a US gallon!

Most of this in the UK of course is Tax! We are still just about self sufficient in oil from the North Sea, but still have the highest prices in Europe as a whole. The Chancellor is blaming high oil prices for the downturn in the UK economy, however he could reduce the tax take to nullify the price rises. After all the tax take from the North Sea has risen in line with prices, but of course it's not just down to high oil prices causing the downturn!

I think these prices would drive all SUV's in the States off the road. What we call an SUV in the UK, is much smaller than the American type. Apart from the size the MPG is usually twice that of an American model.
