I agree with Karen!!! I was there the Thursday after the storm. I lived in a building downtown working to reestablish communications. The Mayor BEGGED the people to leave. It wasn't just the poor blacks in the projects that lost everything, Actually they lost nothing but their cloths. Many people, over a thousand now, lost their lives thinking "we weathered Betsy so we can do it this time." This was almost the absolute "worst case senerio"; almost because if the storm would not have jogged slightly east there would have been no N.O.
Even the cops were looting. I saw them driving around in stolen Escalades, and the Federal Marshals gaurding us with automatic weapons, told me they had 2 N.O. female cops ask them to help hot wire a new Jag. beacuse they thought it would be nicer then the stolen caddy they had. The news media covered N.O. because the welfarites went nutts. Little coverage was given to the people in Chelmete who lost everything and had the ground contaminated by a massive oil spill. In the surrounding parishes (counties) there was no looting, because the cops were told to shoot. When will these people realize the government can't hold their hand all the time. The Gov., Blanco dropped the ball. She had to request the help!!! Local gov is supposed to help first then the feds can come in. It would have been stupid to leave all the aircraft in harms way, they were moved out. When the area could be cleared for landings then then help can arrive. It takes a while to organize this help!!
I will close with this thought. Nawlins survived the storm
!!! It was the flood that caused the problems and it came 1 day later. Thoes levees were never designed to protect above a cat. 3 storm. Katrina was a 4++.
