Subject: PTQ Barcelona: How I did

Ok, here is my tourny report for the PTQ I went to on Saturday. It isn't complete, because I have forgoton some of the stuff, because I have a terrible cold, and I was ill in bed all of Sunday. Anyway, as it was a PTQ Barcelona, it was sealed Invasion/Planeshift with a Top 8 Booster Draft. Here is the deck that I played:

Black (6)

Bog Initiate
Nightscape Familiar
Phyrexian Battleflies
Phyrexian Reaper
Recover
Volcano Imp

Red (6)

Ancient Kavu
Breath of Darigaaz
Caldera Kavu
Kavu Aggressor
Kavu Scout
Tribal Flames

Blue (6)

Dream Thrush
Faerie Squadron
Shoreline Raider
Stormscape Battlemage
Tidal Visionary
Vodalian Serpent

Gold(5)

Cualdron Dance
Crosis, the Purger
Plague Spores
Terminate
Void

Land (17)

7 Swamp
5 Mountain
4 Island
Crosis's Catatombs

When I opened the pack and saw Crosis and Void as 2 of my rares, I knew I was going to play B/R/U. That and the only good G/W cards I got were Charging Troll and Armadillo Cloak.

Round 1 (Opponent Troy)

First game I started off ok, but Troy kept killing off all of my creatures, he managed to get board control fairly quickly, and got me down to 3 life, and just when I thought I had stabalised the situation, he cast Ursa's Guilt finishing me off. In the second game, I sideboarded in a Planeswalker's Mischief. This actualy came as a lot of use as I managed to use his 2 Terminates and his Death Bomb against him. Right near the end of the game, I was on 2 life, and he was on 4, and there were hardly any creatures on the board. He finished me off by casting Agonizing Demise with Kicker.

Result: lose 0-2

Round 2 (Opponent James)

I really can't remember much about this round, but I remember, that James was playing B/R/U. From the life totals that I wrote down, it appears that The first game was won relatively esy by me, the socond was a whitewash for him, and the third was won with ease by me.

Result: win 2-1

Round 3 (Opponent David)

This Matchup was a nightmare. David was one of the people who made top 8. First game, I started off well, casting a few creatures, and even damaging him a bit, but then he started Killing everything I had, and casting his own creatures, and soon, all of the creatures on the board were his, and he just devastated me. Second game went a bit better. We both had turns at dominating the board, and we had both got down to 6 life, and the he cast drew a card and played it. It was Crosis. I had already used my Terminate, so I had no answers to it left in my deck, except for Void. In my turn, I drew my card desperately hoping for Void, but instead I drew my Crosis. ARGHHHHH. I f I had drawn it only a turn earlier, I would have had it in play, and he would have drawn the dead card. Needless to say, next turn he flew across for 6, winning the game.

Result: lose 0-2

Round 4 (Opponent Jason)

Having played Jason at the Planeshift Pre-release, I knew that he made quite a few mistakes, and this match should be easy (at the Planeshift Pre-release, I played him in the first round, and the match was over in a matter of minutes). Jason was playing R/G/W, and the first match, he cast some stuff quick, and I had hardly any creatures out, but was using a bit of removal to keep him in check. At some point he even managed to come across for 1 point of damage. But then I cast Void, and I named 2, because he had 3 creatures with that casting cost in play at the time, he then revealed his hand to show that he had a Kavu Titan, and a Tribal Flames, so they were gone too.I then proceded to cast Fliers aplenty and flew over all of his non-flying creatures and some non-fliers of my own to stop him from attacking me. This won me the game fairly quickly. Then when sideboarding, I noticed that Jason was messing around with his cards alot. Then when he started, the first card he played was an island. It turns out that he had completely changed his deck to R/B/U. This didn't help Jason much however, because the game went very like the last one, but it did require a little more thought than the last game, as he had some of his own fliers this time, and some extra removal. Needless to say I won quite easily.

Result: win 2-0

Round 5 (opponent Kevin O'Conner)

I remember sitting at my table, and then seeing Kevin sitting down opposite me. I have played against Kevin before, and he was not somebody I wanted to play again. He is ranked 42 in sealed in England, and has a DCI rating of 1818. I can't remember many of the specifics of the round, but I remember it was over fairly quickly. And what surprised me was that I won 2-0. That should give me a nice boost to my new DCI limited rating, about 27 points I think :) (I lost my previous DCI number after a breif period of not playing much Magic).

Result: win 2-0

Round 6 (Opponent Ben)

This is another match I don't remember to much, but I remember that he won the first round quickly, because I kept drawing land. I won the second game quickly, and then the third game was a bit more of a stuggle, but I cam out on top, and ended up winning the Round.

Result: win 2-1

Round 7 (Opponent Alan)

Another person I have played before, and another one that I wasn't too pleased to be playing against. I have seen Alan at a few events now, and he has always done good, and I believe that he has a fairly high Rating as well. Alan, was playing pretty much the same deck he played at the Planeshift Pre-release, where he beat me 0-2. But this time I had a deck more suited to beat his. The first game was a white wash for me, I managed to Void away most of his Permenants, and get Crosis out to dominate the board. In the second game however, a bad start by me allowed Alan to get a good Board control up, and he ended up winning by tapping my creatures and attacking with a Tower Drake. The third game though, was very much like the first and was a fairly quick win for me, as I brought out too many Flying creatures for him too handle.

Result: win 2-1

Overall I placed 17th out of approx. 100 people. I enjoyed the day, and have already started to bring up that new DCI rating.
