Subject: Building a Smoker

I've found plans for building a smoker:

Can anyone out there help me with the details of such a plan? What kind of paint is best to use? How many coats? Is this a good smoker, or am I overlooking something better? I am really psyched to make this thing, so any help would be great. If anyone could recommend a good book that would include recipes and cooking tips for beginners...
(hopefully something that can be found at Chapters)
