The funny thing about people is that our attitudes are shaped by our surroundings. Acceptance of others is a set of learned behaviors we experience starting in pre-school and continues throughout our lives unless we make a conscience effort to change them. Years of college obviousely has made little difference in what "special education" teachers have learned about those they should be able to understand and truely help. Why?... because the mindset hasn't changed at the college level. We are truely "sheeple".
Here's a new idea:
I'll bet if we created a class for each grade level for diagnosed dyslexic learners and made it a hands on, fun, multi-sensory class that every child wanted to be in, every parent would be fighting to get the diagnoses. The stigma would change and these smart children would finally get the recognition they derserve, just like those in "Gate". The success rate for these students who soar and all the negativity would end, not to mention the jails would be less crowded with smart criminals that society neglected to accept. It's all in the labeling.
