I would not beat yourself up so much. Even when a student is using English as his primary launge this is still often the case. I know my mother for years tried to convence others of my problems, but due to them being inconsistant, people thinking she was compairing me to my A+ perfect older brother, and me comming across as much more cappable when interacting with everyone than my pears it was constantly missed and over looked.

I would say your time would be much better spent on playing catch up rather than feeling bad about what you had been missing all these times. The trick is just being honist with what difficultys you see in him, instead of what you think you should see. If you watch him do his homework and such, work with him and help him develop skills so to be able to breez through his school work and to test better. He can be the person seeing from the inside out, and you can be the person seeing from the outside in. Between the two of you, you can teach him to see through your eyes, how to look at the materal and breez through it all.
