As he is older and mechanically inclined I would recommend using technology to his advantage to bridge the gap. For example:

Dragon naturally speaking is a nice Voice to text program that allows one to write an essay, journal whatever he can speak he can train this software to write.

Use the computer to 'read' any word file to you...reading web pages is easy also.

Get a digital recorder. I haven't met a dyslexic yet who can take notes without loosing some of the comprehension that is so important.

Utilize audio books or books on cd. These are Fabulous.

Do you know his current reading level. My son is at seventh grade and passed his first year of high school with a 3.2 gpa and is signed up for honors english (due to the ability to 'talk his writing')

Often times local special ed departments have 'adaptive technology' experts. Or look at the more expensive schools websites to see what they are doing like:

It's hard, but keep at it. Have you or he read Sally Shaywitz book 'overcoming dyslexia?"
