Dear lauren
Please remember that all teachesr have felt the same at some stage in their careers. I openly tell my students that I have had significant learning problems and that both my sons have inherited some difficulties too. That means that as a teacher I do not talk from some lofty height but that I can understand some of the difficulties they experience. It should encourage your students. The key is to be really prepared and have a plan B handy. Prepare some exciting activities that you can use if it all goes belly up. I would invest in a laminator, you can download lots of pyramid puzzles on the topic you are teaching, use colourful print and when you need to energize your students, or need a break yourself, you can make them do a pyramid in pairs. If they are nice and laminated, it looks professional, rather than something you have pulled out in desperation. These activities will give you space to re group. Some of the technology available sounds very useful.
I cannot remember any tables if I had to save my life! I have just started teaching maths. Again the key is in the preparation, I work out the answers before I teach. I also use a calculator. I am not the one who has to work out the answers mentally in order to pass any exams anymore; my students do! There is so much technology available at the moment that will help you. Also society is far more accepting of any difficulties that people may have. Most of your age group, dyslexic or not, cannot spell or do mental maths to a high degree anyway. Just pretend you are confident and your students will believe you. good luck!
