To which Prairie replies:
In my Tradition, we use numerology and astrology a lot to choose our names. In numerology, numbers have characteristics. For instance, a "One" person has strong leadership tendencies. To choose our names, we add up our birth numbers and see what characteristic is implied by this number. If we want to strengthen these characteristics, we choose a name that adds up to the same number. If we would like to add more balance to our lives, we choose a name that adds up to a number that embodies the qualities we lack, but would like to incorporate into our lives.
We then look at our natal charts and use the same principle. If there is a lot of water in our charts, we may choose a "watery" name, or if we lack a certain element in our charts, we may choose a name that brings this element into our lives through our names.
It just so happens that my birth name is Prairie. (Well, actually, it's my middle name.) This name has been in my family for four generations. I dropped my first name for various reasons, and I now use my middle name on my drivers license, and for legal purposes.
When it came time to choose my own name, I decided to keep the name Prairie to honor my family. I didn't like the number it added up to, though. I prefered to keep the numerological correspondences to my birthdate. So, after a lot of trial and error, and meditation, I came up with the name Prairie Wind. There is a lot of air in my astrological chart, and I have always been drawn to the wind. My sun sign and my moon sign are both earth signs, and my ascendant is an air sign. I also have five planets in air signs. Prairie represents the earth in my chart, while Wind represents air. And, Prairie Wind adds up to my birth number.
I realize that Prairie Wind sounds vaguely Native American, but that's okay, too, since my great grandfather was Cherokee.
This name fits me well and I am quite happy with it.
