Descended from the squirrel queen of old
The one to vanquish the evil one comes
Thrice she will be caught
Thrice she will escape
The evil one who shadows our land
Knows naught an apposer
Come forth, ye five
Sword bearer, perilous one, badger lord, defiant one
And Archer
Descended from the squirrel queen of old
Come forth and fight!
The vermin army swept through Mossflower, inflicting pain, cruelty, and death on the inhabitants. They attacked peaceful woodlander, enslaving and killing them. The army was composed of rats, ferrets, weasels, stoats, and foxes. But it was led by a wildcat, the only one seen in Mossflower since the time of the great war, so long ago. His name was Serano.
Rosethorn stared ahead, numb with shock, as she was led past the burnt dwellings of the village. Serano’s army had attacked without warning. Now only she was left of her family. She felt so alone. How could she, a young mousemaid do anything? But she new one thing: she would escape, and stop Serano’s bloody rule. Anger bubbled up inside her. A whip lashed across her back. She flinched.
“Come on, look alive, make way for the great Serano!”
The wildcat prowled down the line of slaves, pacing back and forth, his tail lashing. He growled. “You are my slaves now. If I say eat, you eat, if I say starve, you’ll starve. If I say that you may live, you will be kept alive. It I think that you should die, I will make sure that you do not survive.” His voice was cold and flat. “ Take them away.” As the slaves were dragged past him, he noticed a mousemaid staring at him with burning eyes. It was he who looked away first. Rosethorn smiled grimly. It had only just begun.
