Silverpaw bowed before Lord Broadstripe. “Lord, the searats have sailed away with no traces.”
Broadstripe was an old badger, but in his youth he had been a great fighter, and he had a good intuition. “I don’t like it.” He said. “Redclaw Bloodtooth made it clear that he wanted to take over Salamandastron.
Sliverpaw snorted. “Like he could, old chap, wot wot. Wot…” His enthusiasm evaporated as Lord Broadstripe remained silent. “You don’t think he could, sir, do you?” He was aghast. Broadstripe offered him a rare, but worried, smile. “No, Silverpaw, he couldn’t. It’s his disappearance that’s worrying me. If he doesn’t try for Salamandastron, he might go for somewhere else, like Redwall Abbey.” He turned back to the window and looked out. “Silverpaw, I want you to scout around the coast for them.”
“Yes sir, scout around, send em’ packing, wot wot!” The eager young hare bounded out the door. Heading towards the kitchens. Broadstripe shook his head slightly, keeping his eyes on the horizen. Trouble was in the air.
The young otter’s head throbbed. His torso throbbed. In fact, his whole body throbbed. Soft voices filled the air around him. He slowly opened his eyes. He was in a small cave. Two bankvoles were the only other occupants. One of them bustled over and spooned some soup into his mouth. He gulped it down hungrily. “Well, you’ve woken at last. Who are you, anyway?”
“I can’t remember…” He mumbled.
“We rescued you from a flooded river, and you had lots of wounds on you. We’ve healed them by the way. Does that help?” The otter nodded as his memory returned.
“My name is Keroan.” He said. “Me and Ariann, Ariann and I…” Keroan stopped and licked his lips. They were dry. “We were fighting off Serano’s army.”
The bankvole by the fire gasped. “Just the two of ye? The murderous cat’s army?”
The otter nodded. “Ariann was captured. The last I saw of her she was being surrounded. You said that my wounds are healed?” Both bankvoles nodded. Keroan stood up. “Then I must go. Thank you my friends, for everything you’ve done for me, but I must search until I find my friend.” With that the otter turned and left, leaving the two bankvoles alone. The second bankvole leaned back in his chair and sighed.
“Now, will ye look at that. ‘E didn’t even stay for supper.”
