I heard the dawn gongs sound, and as I woke up, my first thoughts went to Terry, my younger brother. I had been at LP School for two years now, and I knew exactly how it felt on your first day. Horrible. And for Terry, it was even worse, what with his name. The Drill Sergeants picked on the first-years, and everyone was especially strict with them, to 'get them into shape'. I knew how sensitive Terry was, and I didn't think it would be long before it all overwhelmed him and he just refused to go.

I had an awful nickname, 'Chloro-Phil', because I loved plants and nature so much, but it was all meant in good jest, so I didn't let it bother me; it wasn't meant to hurt. Neither were the jokes about 'Terrible', but Terry couldn't manage it like me. I was the only beast who could see him for what he truly was; a very scared leveret, desperate to live down his name, prepared to do anything to get some reputation. It wasn't going to work at school, and he would be in big trouble soon enough, but I was determined to give him a good life at the school. That started with waking him and turfing him out of bed. He wouldn't thank me for it at the time, I knew, but he would soon realise what would have happened if he'd been late. Someone always was, and this year, it was not going to be my brother. Not if I could help it. I had to do something for him - no-one else was going to.
