All the Abbey residents were asleep on that fateful night. 'Twas a new moon, so the otter crews in Mossflower had no moonlight to see as the vermin came. They had been here before, oh yes, and had read the gatehouse records, for these vermin were a particularly intelligent breed, and not only could they and talkproperly, but they knew that to wage war on Redwall would end in victory for the Redwallers, no matter what. However, the old red sandstone did have some treasures, the Tapestry, for instance. North, as far north as you could go, was where they lived. 'Twas so far north that the climate was rather warm, warmer than this Mossflower country. No, there land was not Mossflower, but Northwarm it was called. They sent one over the wall with a grappling hook, he unlocked the north wickergate. Only one was needed to go in, called Darkfur, as nobeast, not even himsself, knew his real name. His fur was black, cloak was black, everything about him was dark, black, and merciless. In reality he was a small rat, though nobeast but him knew it, he having murdered his parents. Darkfur easily cu through the fastening with his extremely sharp dagger, with black hilt, pommel stone, and blade, of course. It was so sharp it could slice throughh armor as if it were butter. He rolled the great cloth up, and carried it back to the main body of vermin, who then stole back north. They were well away from Redwall by the time daylight pervaded the night, chasing away bad dreams but not the awful realization, thehorrible shock, the terrifying discovery, that the Tapestry was gone. Without a trace, they said, for no clueshad been found. Except one. Found by a Dibbun squirrel by the name of Samkin, all it was was a black patch of fabric, once part of a completely black cloak, but it was made of a cotton the was nicknamed Blackcloth, for 'twas entirely black, and the darkest cloths, black as a moonless midnight, were made from it, and it came from lands that were constantly at war, inhabited by vermin with their black hearts. The far North. The area just about 50 miles south from the land not known as the North, or the South, nor was it part of Mossflower. But rather, it was named Northwarm.
