I stood outside the school hut in the freezing cold; I couldn't be bothered to go back inside the mountain, as I'd be starting in the near future anyway. I shivered and pressed my ear to the door, trying to hear what was going on inside. I heard Terry's name, and panicked slightly, but it was only the register.

I was so absorbed in the class' discussion that I didn't notice the sergeant's pawsteps approaching the door, and he flung it open into my nose. I stifled a gasp of pain, and stepped backwards into a shadowy crack in the wall, hoping I wouldn't be noticed - I doubted that he liked eavesdroppers, somehow.

We headed out of the classroom to practice our combat skills on the sparring ground, after a quick tutorial from the sergeant. He looked quite comical, but I had prepared myself for the worst. I enjoyed fighting, but I was no good at it. It was with shaking paws that I picked up my sabre.
