Samkin's eyes searched the forest. He had heard it. He knew it. The vermin were close by. Of course, he was perched in an elm. He had traveled swiftly to intercept the vermin. Then he heard it again. A twig snapped. Then another. He could hear leaves being brushed aside, branches cracked, and whippy saplings branches swishing quikly into place. The sound of leaves being crumpled underpaw increased. The vermin surely was were making nopise. He was just getting ready to jump into a nearby dagwood when he saw them. A vast horde, huge! Redwall was lucky they didn't have to fight this army. Then he saw the tapestry! Beautiful as ever, it was strung to a pike sticking high in the air, serving as a hugely impressive standard. He waseasing his unstrung bow out of his quiver, the vermin directly beneath him, when a slingstone came whizzing up and knocking, unconscious, quiver and all, frm his position in the forest guardian.
At Redwall, the sparras had discovered something on the Abbey roof. It was words, but luckily, there were a few sparras who had taken it into them to learn how to read. Or course, they couldn't write, what with the lack of paws and presence of talons. The engravement read as thus: 'If ever there is a time in Redwall when a great trouble occurs, and there is no way to get help from Salamandastron otherwise, place Martin the Warrior's shield on the slot below. Nothing will happen till a lightning storm.' And, of course, there was a place below this for the shield to go. Now, the Abbot ralised that this was a very quick way to get Salamandastron's help with the Tapestry business, so, while still not knowing what would happen, he had the shield installed.
Luckily, a lightning storm struck the very dayafter the shield had been placed. The shield was at a /VERY/ strange angle, and many doubted anything would happen at all. But, as a brilliant bolt of lightning struck the shield, and a loud blast of thunder rolled into the very foundations of Redwall Abbey, through every crack, nook and cranny, something extremely odd happened.
The shield, set as it was at an odd angle, actually deflected the lightning, and it soared through the sky, visible as a brilliant bright streak, for a good few leagues.
Lord Brockstripe saw this, and, knowing from the histories of his ancient mountain that this meant Redwall was in deep trouble, set out immediately, leaving half the Long Patrol, five hundred hares, to be exact, to guard the mountain, he took the other half and set out at once.
