“He’s getting smarter, I have to admit.” Roseapple and the other chieftains were holding a meeting in one of Brockhalls many unused dormitories. They couldn’t meet in the front room anymore because Oiltongues guards had made their camp outside, due to the increasing number of escaped slaves. The five score that had been liberated so far lived in the back dormitories with the chieftains sharing one room. Roseapple represented the Hemlock dray, Spearsteam’s Skipper was acting as the Skipper of the otters for all of Mossflower and Caterina was the acting commander of the Redwall forces. Captain Shortbow had taken two score to the southern caves to rally the hares in enslavement and recruit any otters or squirrels they could. She was due back in another season or so.

“It’s almost impossible to get in or out of here. If Oiltongue suspects…” Skipper voiced the thoughts of all of them. Brockhall had become a very dangerous place to be sitting in. The only thing that kept them from moving was the fact that there was nowhere else to go. All of the decent quarters had been captured by the tyrant. Only the still standing pieces of history remained.

“What about the old farmhouse by the river?” asked Caterina

“Covered with troops.” Skipper looked worried as he stroked his whiskers. “Is there any abandoned home somewhere in Mossflower?”

Elmtree entered the room bringing news and a possible solution. “Well, the guards where sniffing around the doors up top. Everyone else has retreated to the mole tunnels. We could go to Moledeep, but only to gather our forces to invade Redwall.”

“What!” Outraged cries echoed from all present. The squirrel continued on outlining his plan. “We go straight to where Oiltongue won’t think of us. We liberate the peaceful and replace them with fighting beasts so that when we’re ready, we surround Redwall and take it. Roseapple and I should go first. He hasn’t ever seen us and won’t recognize us if we’re spotted. Caterina, he knows you to well and Skipper, you need to take over the squirrels. We’ll get the mole to dig us into the cellars of the abbey. Caterina, you said that there was a passage leading to the cornerstone from the wine cellars? If so we can use that to keep in touch and move beasts in and out of the abbey.”

Murmured agreement followed this statement and the council broke up, gathering their scanty possessions, they proceeded to the escape tunnel and slipped out of Brockhall.
