Subject: Bye Bye Bundaberg!

Well, it's been 5 weeks, and we're finally leaving on Friday! Wooohoooo! I must admit, much to my surprise Bundaberg has grown on me. I'm going to be a little sad to leave (though now sad to stop working!). It's a nice little town, and it's been cool staying in the same place for a while. We've gotten to know the people at our hostel after living with them for so long. It's a lot harder to do that when you only stay in one place for a few nights.

This is my first day off in 2 weeks, so I am enjoying it immensely. Sarah is off kneeling in mud picking sweet potatos right now :( Tonight we will probably be going to a TaeKwon-Do class. There is a WTF TaeKwon-Do school in town, and we've already gone to 2 classes there. It feels so good to get some exercise and do TaeKwon-Do again! We've been doing a lot of sitting around this past while.

The last time Sarah and I had a day off together (which was over 2 weeks ago), we went to the Bundaberg Rum Distillary. Bundaberg Rum is the cities claim to fame, it's sold all over the country. Bundaberg is often referred to as the "Rum-City". Anyways, for the price of $5.50 we got a very interesting tour of the distillary, and TWO FREE DRINKS!! It was a really good deal. We both had a rum and cola, and then some liquor with milk. They make this rum-caramel-chocolate-coffee liquor which is really yummy. We actually managed to get a 3rd drink each because they forgot to take Sarah's coupon on time, and this other lady gave us one of her extras. For our 3rd drink we had a "Dark and Stormy", which is Rum and Gingerbeer.

The Dark and Stormy so good that we ended up buying another 4 pack of those, and going to the park to drink them! They have a really beautiful swampy nature preserve nearby, with lots of water fowl (some one which make really weird sounds that sound like monkeys). We sprawled out on the grass in the sun, drank our drinks, and played scrabble... it was such a nice day. It became quite obvious that I don't drink very often as after a few drinks I found myself trying to spell words such as "RK"... hehe. We had a nice time though. It's only unfortunate we didn't get more days off together while we were here, because a day off alone tends to get rather boring.

We get along with our roommates really well, it's like coming home to a little family. There are Sean and Mike from South Africa, and Micheal from Holland. Micheal made Sarah and I a lovely dinner last night, which was really nice of him. I also found out the other day that Mike and I have the EXACT same birthday... down to the half hour! December 2nd 1981 11:30 pm... it was a pretty crazy coincidence! We used to have an Irish roommate named Brian as well, but he left a few days ago. (It was about time, he had been in Bundy for THREE MONTHS!)

When we leave on Friday, we'll be spending 3 nights in the town of 1770. It's the most northerly surf beach on the east coast, and also the start of the great barrier reef. Seeing as Sarah and I won't be going up any further north on our trip, it'll be our opportunity to see the great barrier reef. They also have surfing lessons there for $11, so maybe we'll give that a try! I think we'll just be happy staying in a hostel that isn't as dumpy as our current one ;)

After 1770, we are going to head down to Hervey Bay, where we can catch a ferry to Fraser Island. Fraser Island is a huge sand island, and one of the most popular tourist desinations in Australia. Most likely we will be doing a "self drive 4x4 2 night camping safari". That's when you get a 4x4 jeep and all your camping geer provided, and you take off with around 8 people to explore the island. It's supposed to be pretty cool. We're hoping to spot some dingos, sharks and manta rays, and go swimming in the gorgeous lakes. The ocean around fraser island is one of the most dangerous places to swim in australia, but the lakes are supposed to be lovely.

After Fraser Island we are going to be heading down south towards Sydney. We might stop in Brisbane and Byron Bay along the way, but we're not sure yet. I'm really looking forward to being in Sydney, it'll be cool to be in a big city again... plus I get to see Joanna!

Once we get to Syndey we're going to buy a train pass that we can use to go between Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Alice Springs, Darwin, and Perth. That will be a lot of time on the train, but it will be cool to see so much of the country, and the trains here are really nice.

After we're done exploring australia the plan is to spend a few days (maybe a week?) in Malaysia on the way back... we definately didn't stay there long enough last time. So much to see (and so much food to try!!) ;)

This email is getting crazy long, and I think I'm running out of things to say. Hope you're all doing well! I'm certainly happy to be getting back to travelling after working for 5 weeks.

Love to all!!

From Nomi
