Subject: Sporting Biography

This is Kacy, a senior Kinesiology major, raised in Frederick, Md, and still living there. Being the only daughter of a house wife and a military officer, my parents started me out very young in many facets of sports and physical activity. However, much of what I have actually been involved in, many of you might not consider as "real" sports. At two I was enjoying hockey games with my parents, cheering on the Caps every season, and to this day, sorry, but they are still my all time favorite sports team!!! At 4, ballet, tap, and gymnastics classes are where my mother thought every little girl should be. At 5, my mother tired out because I was out of control with so much energy decided to put me into yet another activity, which has been the main sport in my life for the past 17 years, Baton Twirling. At age 6 I began performing in local and regional parades, at 7 I began competing on the national level, winning my first national title at age 8. Also at 7, after deciding that I wanted to be a tomboy, and not take dance anymore, my parents put my into figure skating, to develop a more graceful approach to baton, but along with that I also played Ice Hockey. Having a professional ballerina as a baton coach, dance still remained in my life. At 9, soccer was a hobby for a bit, but that wore off pretty quickly, this was more of a leisure activity. At 16 I was a Cheerleader for my high school football and basketball teams. At 15, and 19, I competed in the World Baton Twirling Championships in Milan, Italy and Birmingham, England. And at age 22, after retiring I helped coach my first team at the 2003 World Championships in Marsaille, France. Now I coach Baton Twirlers on the national and international level, I work with Cheerleaders throughout the state, and I am a professional choreographer, working with many high school dance squads and even the University of Maryland Dance Team on occasion. I have never been very good at being a spectator, even coaching is hard for me because I would rather be out on the competition floor or on the field entertaining people, as opposed to standing on the sidelines. Due to my experience and involvement in these sports, I now enjoy them as a very large part of my income, and hopefully with a degree in Kinesiology I can use my educational experiences here at Maryland to continue working in these fields and either go on to PT school, athletic training, or even sports marketing.
