The Italian prisoners used to make birds on sticks for us. I used to get told off for telling them my mums name because they used to call her all the time. I also remember the soldiers at the end of the road on guard. Our road was the last road on the Speke estate and the top half of Lovel road were the half houses. We could see all the way to Hale from the back bedroom. We used to walk there every Sunday along Hale Road past Stevensons, the cottage that used to sell sweets - and everything else. At the bottom of Western Avenue there were 4 shops, the CO-OP, The Butchers, The Chemist and Berties. The leckie House in Tewitt Hall,the cottages and the Smithy at the now crescent. I remember one of the cottages that mum used to take us to, we had to have codliver oil then orange juice - I can still taste the oil now. I remember the cafe at the bottom of Western was Tommy Butlers! On the corner of Oglet Lane was the Baptist Church. I think Mrs Graham was the teacher, further down the lane was Mr Bleeze's house, then the old RAF huts that later on became the British Legion. My dad Henry Page was one of the founder Members when he came home during the war(1943). Back then there where no pubs in Speke which made the legion the first pub/club.
