"Adam?" his mother had asked. "What are you doing?"

He shrugged and she sat next to him. Adam leaned into her and breathed deep. She was flowers and spice and her long hair brushed his cheek. She held him and made him safe but when he looked up, her face was a blur.

"Adam," his father said, his voice quiet and sad.

He didn't answer, just stood at the cold window.

His father's hands rested on his shoulders and Adam leaned back against his legs. "Your mother is not coming home."

Adam looked up. "But you did," he replied softly.
