it's important to have a basis in motivation for your characters. LFN characters, with the exception of Michael during most of the run of the show, had definite purposes and motivations directly connected to the combination of their individual personalities, their fields of expertise, and the jobs they had to do.
I believe it's one of the reasons the show's fan fiction has been so successful.
As to Michael, his masked personality, multiples talents, and uncertain motivations, the opposite of the other characters, and the perfect foil for all of them, were equal contributors to the success of both show and fanfic.
