But since your opinions were affected by fannish commentary, I think it's helpful to examine where that commentary is coming from. Seeing the motivation of the commenters might enable you to react differently, in my opinion.

For example, take this:

Paul though - more or less, especially in fan commentary rather than fic - tended to be seen as at least competant, if coldhearted and ruthless (though hardly logical - someone called him that in the last ep I watched and, um hello?), where Nikita was not.

You're right -- there was some commentary to that effect. But if you look at the larger context of overall fan commentary, I think you might see the comparison between Paul and Nikita wasn't nearly as stark. Almost all of the people who compared Nikita unfavorably to Paul in those instances had absolutely no hesitation to call Paul a terrible leader in every other context (especially in comparison to Michael, whose near-perfect leadership skills they never hesitated to extol). Their critique of Nikita has nothing to do with Paul, in fact, other than the coincidence that he happened to hold the position she eventually took over. They would have made the very same unfavorable comparisons if someone else, with very different character traits than Paul, had been in his place (George, or Petrosian, or Adrian, or Madeline, or any other character you can come up with). Paul, as a person, was actually irrelevant.

If you can see that, then perhaps you can stop thinking of Paul in opposition to Nikita, and then you might be able to view the character without the same kind of distaste.
