I suppose you could pull many different genre elements into a canon story - scifi through cloning or mind control + high tech weapons and a disutopian future; or horror through the obvious range of insane villains, or mystery, and I've seen both done well in fic; or add in supernatural horror through gothic horror and ghosts, which fit well into canon too.

Historical genres are harder to fit into canon, though...!

But there is something appealing about feeling completely in charge of the universe yourself, as the author, that I've found also satisfies with AU.
